Pets are amazing, right? They’re part of the family, and almost as loved and cherished as the kids. The problem is that they can also be just as messy as the kids – usually more so! You can teach your kids to pick up after themselves eventually, but pets rely on you for help with that. It’s not like you can teach a cat not to shed on your furniture or teach a dog not to leave dander on your sofa.
So how do you maintain a beautiful and spotless house despite having pets? After all, you don’t want to confine them to one small room. That room would get very smelly very quickly, and your pets won’t feel as loved when they can’t be part of your daily life. You also won’t be as happy when you can’t pet them, or have them come cuddle you when you’re feeling down.
Dirt Devil has a solution for pet owners. Their Dirt Devil Power Swerve 16V Lithium Cordless Stick Vacuum was manufactured with pet owners in mind. I tested this product at home to see how well it could clean up after Lady Flufflebuns and want to share what I’ve learned. If you’re not looking for as thorough a review, then feel free to skip to the end of this review, where I’ve left a short list of Pros and Cons for you instead.
What makes this so great for pets?
A lot of people think that there isn’t much differentiation between vacuums. Some have heavy duty power with large bags, and some are light and have smaller bags, but at the end of the day, aren’t they all basically the same?
No, actually. The tools a vacuum contains vary greatly depending on needs. This one is specialized for pet messes. It uses a Spin 4 Pro premium pet brush roll specifically designed for pets. This removes pet hairs from furniture and carpets with maximum efficiency, maintaining power and not getting rendered useless when hair clogs the roll. You should find absolutely no trace of hair in your wake once you’ve passed this through.
The fact that this is a stick vacuum makes it lightweight and cordless. This means that you can quickly and easily run little touch up passes over your furniture and carpets to eradicate lingering hair before company or at the end of each day without lugging around a heavy vacuum with an annoying cord.
Where does it reach?
The great thing about this vacuum is that it is designed to reach everywhere. Unlike larger, bulkier vacuums, this one doesn’t require you to pull out special suction tubes and brushes or swap a setting every time you change surfaces.
It maintains a constant suction power throughout your usage, no matter whether you’re working with high pile carpets or hardwood floors.
On top of that, the swivel steering makes this vacuum extremely flexible. Unlike traditional vacuum cleaners, stick cleaners will be much easier to maintain, to change direction, and to get into those awkward corners and hard to reach places underneath the furniture. Gone are the days of pushing your couch aside to vacuum well or worse… leaving the area underneath it devoid of any cleaning until you eventually want to rearrange your home with new furniture and realize the carpet is a completely different shade. After all… you’re pet owners! There’s no need to collect dust bunnies when you’ve got living animals at home.
You are also not tied down by the length of a cord. There’s nothing worse than having to constantly unplug and re-plug a vacuum cleaner, or having kids trip over the cord while you work, or having the cord unplug itself because you extended its reach just a little bit too far to get that last little corner. Thanks to the 16 volt lithium battery, you can get all the charge you need out of one run without any more cords getting in your way, then just rapidly recharge so you’re ready next time you vacuum.
What are some of the drawbacks?
Every product has somewhere they can improve, and great products are no exception. In the interest of being honest with my review, I will let you know that this model does have some areas to work on.
The stick model’s main drawback is that the space is limited. Your vacuum may clog up pretty quickly if you’re picking up bigger messes than just hair and crumbs. You’ll have to spend some time unclogging it when this happens.
The battery life should last long enough for most clean up jobs, but it does start to lose charge over the span of its life – just like all batteries do. Eventually, you will get less power per recharge and need to re place either the battery or the vacuum.
While this works really well on carpet, tile, and hardwood floors, the consistent suction means that the job it does varies. It naturally performs much better on carpets and fabrics than it does on hard surfaces, and you may need to go over an area more than once to get it clean if you’re working on hardwood floors.
Pros and Cons
I promised a brief list so you can make an at a glance decision about this review, so here are my top pros and cons when it comes to this vacuum.
- Extremely flexible – thanks to cordless technology and swivel head it reaches anywhere without a hassle
- Spin 4 Pro premium brush roll sucks up all pet hair without clogging vacuum’s suction power
- Lightweight and easy to use and store out of sight
- Easy to use and easy to empty
- Not as efficient on hard wood floors as it is on carpet
- Hard to get replacement filters for this model
This is a great vacuum for quick spot checks on your pet hair. It has a specialized brush roll dedicated to pet hair needs and the swivel action lets you get into hard to reach places. Without the cord, you can go anywhere you need with ease.
